LaConcha Hotel

The Crowne Plaza – LaConcha Hotel was built in 1926, and remains the tallest civilian building in Key West, Florida. I took this picture at sunset one evening, but since this building is center on Duval street I passed it many times. I also was able to procure a handmade palm-tree frond hat by one of the local vendors right on this corner one day.

I asked Kenney, the hat vendor, how his business was going. Apparently, he makes about $40 an hour, and skateboards into work when he feels like it, from the nearby dock, where his live-on boat is located. His major work gripes are finding a spot, when tourist traffic is so large and there are multiple vendors vying for the same spot, and of course, when the locals don’t have any palm tree fronds that need to be thrown into the garbage (his main supply chain).
